A staycation in Singapore is basically an expensive way to sleep 20 minutes from your own bed. So the hotel has to earn it. It needs something you can't get at home: a pool with a view, a breakfast worth waking up for, or a neighbourhood you'd never normally spend a night in.

These ten earn it, in different ways and at very different prices. For each one we say who it's for and who's better off elsewhere.

Marina Bay Sands

You're paying for one thing: the infinity pool, 57 floors up, and it's for hotel guests only. Is it touristy? Very. Is swimming to the edge of that pool while the city lights up still a genuine "wow"? Also yes.

Insider tipAsk for a city-view room on a higher floor. Then go to the pool at opening time or late in the evening, when it's calmer and you can actually get a photo without 200 strangers in it.

Skip it ifYou want peace and quiet. Between the casino, the mall and the tour groups, this is the busiest hotel in Singapore.

Raffles Hotel Singapore

The grande dame. It's all suites, has butlers, and has white colonial verandas where it's easy to believe it's still 1920. The Singapore Sling was invented at the Long Bar, where tradition says you throw your peanut shells on the floor.

Insider tipThe public areas, shops and bars are open to non-guests. If a suite is out of budget, a Sling at the Long Bar gets you a taste for much less.

Skip it ifYou want a pool with a view or a buzzing scene. Raffles is about heritage and hushed service, not a party.

Capella Singapore

A hilltop retreat on Sentosa, hidden in rainforest, with peacocks wandering the lawns. It's so private that it hosted the 2018 Trump–Kim summit. Of everything on this list, it's the one that feels least like you're still in Singapore.

Insider tipBook a villa with a private pool if the budget stretches. Some of them make you forget there's a city out there at all.

Skip it ifYou want to go out at night. Getting off Sentosa in the evening takes some effort, and that's the whole point of the place.

The Fullerton Bay Hotel

A smaller, glassier sibling of the famous Fullerton Hotel, sitting right on the water at Marina Bay. You get the MBS view without being inside the MBS crowd. The rooftop bar, Lantern, is one of the best spots in town to watch the bay at night.

Insider tipHave breakfast or tea at The Clifford Pier next door, a restored 1930s pier where immigrants and sailors once came ashore.

Skip it ifYou want a big resort pool. The rooftop pool is lovely but small.

It's big, green, and quietly reliable. The hotel sits in acres of tropical gardens just off Orchard Road, with a huge pool area that works for kids and grown-ups alike. It feels like a resort without the trip to Sentosa.

Insider tipRooms are spread across different wings, and they're not all the same. Check which wing you're booking before you pay.

Skip it ifYou want cool design. It's classic luxury, not Instagram-new.

Best for Families, multi-generation trips

PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering

It's the building that looks like a jungle took over a car park, in the best way. The sky gardens cascade down the side of the hotel, and the pool deck has birdcage-style cabanas. It's great value for how photogenic it is.

Insider tipChinatown, Clarke Quay and Hong Lim Park are all a few minutes' walk away, so you can eat at a hawker centre for breakfast and do cocktails on the river at night.

Skip it ifYou want a sea or bay view. You're looking at the city here.

It's an underrated way to get a Marina Bay view. Many rooms look straight across the water, and the pool deck is excellent. It's also a favourite on Formula 1 weekend, since the street circuit runs right past it.

Insider tipBook a bay-view room and time your stay for a weekend with the Marina Bay light show. You'll have the best seat in the house from your window.

Skip it ifIt's F1 weekend and you're not an F1 fan. Prices soar and roads close.

W Singapore – Sentosa Cove

The fun one. It sits next to a marina full of yachts, has a big pool scene with a DJ energy, and the service is playful rather than formal. It's the staycation for a birthday weekend with friends.

Insider tipSentosa Cove has its own waterfront restaurants and bars, so you don't need to go into the busy tourist part of Sentosa at all.

Skip it ifYou want quiet. Try Capella instead, on the other side of the same island.

It's a restored 1895 godown (riverside warehouse), with industrial-chic rooms, a rooftop pool, and more character per square metre than anything else on this list. Robertson Quay's riverside cafés and bars are right outside the door.

Insider tipStay on a Saturday night and do Sunday brunch along the river. It's the perfect lazy Robertson Quay weekend.

Skip it ifYou need a big room. Boutique here means compact.

Hotel Fort Canning

A 1920s colonial building that sits inside Fort Canning Park. You wake up to birdsong and greenery, then walk down the hill to the city in five minutes. It's heritage without the Raffles price tag.

Insider tipWalk the park early, before it gets hot. The Spice Garden and the old fort gate are just outside.

Skip it ifYou want a view of the skyline. The trees block most of it, which is the whole point.

How to pay less for a staycation

  • Go Sunday to Monday. The same room is often much cheaper than on Friday or Saturday night, and the pool is quieter.
  • Do the maths on packages. Breakfast and dining credit bundles sometimes cost less than paying separately, and sometimes they're pure padding. Check both.
  • Book refundable when booking early. Rates often drop closer to the date, and a free cancellation lets you rebook at the lower price.
